TRAINEES LOOKING FOR A SPONSOR

We understand the hardest part of entering the profession, is finding a sponsor.  We suggest a couple of things:

  1. Join the Association of Texas Appraisers. Association of Texas Appraisers - Home (txappraisers.org)  Appraising Appraiser membership is only $25/year. Our mid-year meeting is held every February in the New Braunfels/San Marcos area.  Our annual meeting is held in the fall in various locations across the state.  We also have regional meetings and socials for networking opportunities.  Check here for our upcoming meetings.  Please consider attending at least one of these events.

  2. Join the National Association of Appraisers The National Association of Appraisers - Join us (naappraisers.org) Associate membership is $50/year.

  3. PAREA (Practical Applications of Real Estate Appraisal) - PAREA provides an alternative to the traditional supervisor/trainee model.  Details are on the web page here: PAREA (appraisalfoundation.org).

Finding a supervisor is the hardest part of entering the profession, however there is some good news on the horizon.  The Appraisal Foundation (TAF-this organization sets the Congressionally authorized standards and qualifications for real estate appraisers as well as qualifications for personal property appraisers and provides voluntary guidance on recognized valuation methods and techniques for all valuation professionals) has approved a program for trainees to get their appraisal experience through practical applications without a supervisor.  The program is called Practical Applications of Real Estate Appraisal (PAREA). It is now part of the Real Property Appraiser Qualification Criteria (Criteria) (Pages 11-12, and 28-34). Here is a summary of the PAREA concept. The Foundation has a dedicated PAREA webpage on their website that will be updated as things become available.

TAF approved the first provider, the Appraisal Institute.  Their program is live and all you need to do to receive information is to create a profile through the following link - https://www.appraisalinstitute.org/aiparea/.

Click on the link below and sign-up for their e-news, and pay particular attention to any articles on PAREA (Practical Applications of Real Estate Appraisal).  More providers will be approved in the coming months.
